The Asia fellowship was established in 1992.The exchange programme for junior physicians and scientists counterbalances the usually USA-focused sportmedical education. Four GOTS-fellows are selected every alternate year. According to the size of the GOTS-countries two fellows from Germany, one from Austria and one from Switzerland are entitled to travel to Asia.

The young physicians have the opportunity to increase their specialist knowledge in Japan and South Korea, to gather new scientific and cultural impressions and to get in touch with the authorities on sports orthopaedics of these countries. In the following year four highly scientifically qualified colleagues from Japan and Korea travel on a return visit to the GOTS-countries, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

For promotion of the sports orthopaedic exchange in Europe the fellowship programme was extended in 1998.The DJO-Fellowship provides the opportunity on an annual basis to visit the leading sport scientific institutes and hospitals and to get an idea of the working methods of the colleagues. Beyond this the fellows have the chance to present the activities and achievements of the GOTS and the sports medicine of the GOTS countries.

The fellowship programmes are the basis for long lasting contacts and an international network. The group of former fellows has grown to a considerable international community. In the mean time many of the former fellows occupy decisive positions in medicine, science or professional associations.
